Review of Gereon M Uller: A-bar Syntax

A-bar Syntax is a very welcome addition to the crosslinguistic study of A-bar movement. It contains a wealth of interesting data, in particular from German, but also from Russian, Korean, and other languages. Moreover, it is written in a very clear style which makes it pleasant and easy to read despite its close to 500 pages. M uller's book serves at least two purposes: Firstly, it is an introduction to locality theory with focus on German; secondly, we nd an in depth discussion of the Principle of Unambiguous Binding that M uller has developed in recent work together with Wolfgang Sternefeld (see M uller and Sternefeld, 1993). The book is a slightly revised form of the introduction and rst ve chapters of M uller's 1993 dissertation (M uller, 1993). Each of the ve chapters concentrates on one type of A-bar movement: chapter 2 on overt wh-movement; chapter 3 on scrambling; chapter 4 on Dative movement; chapter 5 on covert wh-movement; and chapter 6 on topicalization.
